Biotechnology: a ticket to the Future

You have read about all JEE advanced important topics but do you know You can make a tomato plant to produce potato at their roots using biotechnology. A “pomato” plant if you will.

Scientists can edit the DNA of human embryos using gene-editing tool CRISPR. This biotecnology can prevent babies from being born with incurable diseases or disabilities.

Some of the best and most important recent innovations are from the Biotechnology.

What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that unites the biological sciences with engineering technology. This discipline creates products for agriculture, environmental control, food, healthcare, medicine, and pharmaceuticals.

Biotechnology offers two directions : Research and Development in sciences or in industrial processes.

innovations in field of biotechnology

Some other fantastic innovations that have developed thanks to biotechnology include:

  • Development in stem cell technology
  • Genomic sequencing technology or DNA
  • Natural alternatives to pesticides
  • Production of biofuels

what will you study in college?

If you choose biotechnology, you will study both the biological as well as the engineering aspects. These topic are bit different from JEE advanced important topics.

The curriculum will include Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology among others. The engineering course work will include Biochemical & Bioprocess Engineering, Mass Transfer and even Thermodynamics.

A scientifically oriented degree will focus more on biological aspects. There will be some course work that relates to industrial processes, but, the focus will be more on Research and Development.

What is the core field of job?

While a bachelor’s degree will get you a job, some biotechnology careers will need a graduate degree for advancement. You may need a Masters or even a Ph.D. to do the type of work you are interested in.

Employment opportunities for biotechnologists can be found in:
  • Agriculture
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Conservation of the Environment
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Health Care
  • Industrial R & D
  • Medicine
Also, there is a major focus in this sector through out the world. Opportunities for U.G. and P.G. studies and research are available in the United States and Europe.
