Why Spot Counselling?

Often after all the rounds of JEE Main counselling and Seat Allotment, many seats remain vacant in colleges. To fill these seats, JoSSA conducts Spot counselling. In Spot Counselling candidates have another go at the Institutes and Programs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Spot Counselling

  1. A candidate may not be allotted any seat during the regular counselling. In spot counselling you will get a second chance at getting into IIT and NIT.
  2. A candidate might be allotted a seat. But he/she might not be satisfied with college. In this case, also the candidate will get a chance to change the college.
  3. A candidate might not be satisfied with the branch. In spot counselling, you can change that too.
  4. Sometimes seats in top technical institutes remain vacant by chance. In spot counselling, you can get a seat in such colleges.

  1. There is no provision for online spot counselling. The whole process is offline. Candidates have to go to very distant centres. Which is not possible for all the candidates.
  2. The allocation of the seat is not entirely based on ranks.
  3. The spot counselling participation fee of 2000 rupees is not refundable.

The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) has started conducting a special round of online counselling due to all these reasons.

JEE main 2019 FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

How many colleges can I chose for JEE main Counselling?

There is no such limit for the number of colleges that you can choose. You can make your choices according to your preferences of Institutes and courses. But it’s not advisable to chose a lot of college without putting any thoughts into it.

How do I know which colleges to select during the counselling process?

There are more than 20000 seats available if all the seats are counted. But you should first set your priorities straight. Decide upon a preferred course and select the best colleges that offer them.

There is good practice in choosing the colleges. First, take your rank. Now check the seats offered by each of the colleges that you prefer, say you have 12 colleges in your mind. Make sure that the sum of the seats offered by these colleges is not less than your JEE Main ranks.

Can I change the choices of colleges and course after the counselling?

There are 7 rounds of counselling that take place. You can edit and change your choices after each round. But remember, after each round the number of seats in colleges will reduce. Which in turn will reduce your chances of getting admitted. So, have your preferences in mind before the counselling gets started. Go through the previous year counselling data. Go through the Cut-off ranks for your desired colleges. This will give you a rough idea of which colleges you have a chance of getting admitted into.
Even if you are not satisfied with your choice after 7 rounds, you can always take part in spot counselling. You can change your preferences during that time also.
